From the Sands: An Ode to Black Womxn

Inspired by the life given from the first Black womxn of the Saan/Sān people of Southern Africa whose DNA is responsible for cultivating and populating all of society.

Before you return to the earth...

Before you’re born, and the water that has kept you has dried bare. Before you inhale your first breath, and sung your first cry to the top of your lungs. Before you meet air, and are met with the breeze. Before you find yourself in someone’s house. Before you make it a home. Before your birthdays come. Before you know time and pain. Before you are potty-trained. Before you find your voice, and witness its power. Before you hurt and are hurt. Before you leave. Before you are cradled back together. Before you grow and stumble.

Before you discover yourself. Before you lie. Before you forgive. Before you are taught. Before you re-learn. Before you forget. Before you run. Before you hide. Before you know. Before you realize there is no one coming to save you. Before you eat your own sorrow and swallow the seeds. Before you are bent. Before you listen. Before you discover self again and again. Before you can’t face the mirror anymore. Before you deny your smile comes with teeth and happiness.

Before you regret. Before you love. Before you find joy. Before you believe. Before you rise. Before you are broken. Before you decide. Before your feet guide you. Before you create. Before you understand. Before you are but the dust.

...Remember: you come from a Black woman.
